USA’s 2021 ESG Federal Agenda

The Biden-Harris government have taken on ESG related measures in a new way. They have signed back on to the Paris Climate Agreement, instituted workplace discriminations and stated that non-financial reporting disclosures will begin to be held to the same criterion as financial reporting.

There is a keen focus on ESG reporting and firms are encouraged to focus on a few key areas:

  1. Using data to show tangible progress and accurately pin point areas that are lacking. Accountability is key. The usual practice of glossing over data points that don’t do the company any favours should be done away with.
  2. ESG reports will need to share features with financial disclosure reports. Europe’s laws on ESG reporting are being picked up by America. Soon, the world will follow.
  3. Infrastructure to develop ESG reporting should begin now. Begin the data collection now.
